World Orchid Show 2011

Singapura, oh Singapura,

Sunny island set in the sea,

Singapura, oh Singapura,

Pretty flowers bloom for you and me!

The 20th World Orchid Conference was held in Marina Bay Sands Expo Singapore from 14 to 20 November 2011. As orchids are among my favourite flowers, I was extremely excited to get a complimentary single day family entry ticket to the World Orchid Show and the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay!

There are so many people with all sorts of styles taking pictures of a variety of flowers (and orchids, of course!) using all kinds of cameras – compact, DSLR, with tripod, smartphones and even iPads. I myself have taken so many pictures. Here are just a few of them. Enjoy! 🙂

Inside Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay

The Flower Dome looks amazing from outside and is simply cool inside. That’s because it houses a variety of flowers from all over the world, including desert plants such as desert rose, Old Man of Peru and baobabs. There’s a large sculpture of Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim, that towers over the visitors.

Giant Vanda Miss Joaquim looks over other orchids.

At the WOC Show at Marina Bay Sands are the winning breeds, arrangements and landscape displays from all over the world.

Was pleasantly surprised to see many interesting breeds of orchids. Apart from the unique black orchids, those that were named after Sir Elton John and the late Princess Diana received the most attention.

Black orchids

Aranda Broga Giant, obviously a huge breed

Dendrobium Pop Eye. Will it thrive on spinach? 😉

Doritaenopsis Sir Elton John

Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana

Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore’s national flower

I love this orchid because it’s shaped like a star!

Hmm… I didn’t know vanilla is a type of orchid!
